Design a Classic Floor for Your Classic Car
Owning a classic car can be an exacting hobby. To maintain the value
of your investment, it is important to look after it. You must make
sure you find the right tools and skilled specialists for restoration
work. It is also important to make sure your car is housed in a clean
environment, such as a garage with a floor made from durable protective
material that is resistant to stains and can easily be cleaned after
working on your car. You also want your garage floor to look smart and
show off your car to good effect.
Here's a rundown of some of the best flooring solutions for surfaces
to complement your classic car:
Concrete:
Concrete offers an inexpensive and practical floor surface. However,
bare concrete is porous and can be dusty, therefore concrete garage
floors should be sealed to prevent moisture ingress and damage from
accidental oil and chemical spillages. For the discerning classic car
owner, another downside of concrete is that it can look rather dull
and uninspiring.
Floor Paint:
Floor paint can be applied over concrete and sealant. It has the great
advantage of being available in a variety of colours, so you can choose
one that suits your classic car and helps it look its best.
Tiles or Vinyl:
But if you want something with more design possibilities, then consider
floor tiles or roll-out vinyl. These can be laid quickly and easily
in a variety of colours and patterns, although there are more durable
options for your garage floor.
Epoxy:
To combine quick and easy with durable, an epoxy floor could be the
way to go. Epoxy floors can be laid in just a couple of hours and are
used in a variety of locations, including shops and healthcare environments,
where the right colour scheme is crucial and fast installation times
are a big advantage. Epoxy gives a clean edge and a hard-wearing finish
that offers great stain resistance and safety features. A highly polished
look can be achieved, one which will complement the gleaming lines of
your classic car. Plus, you'll have time to go for a spin.
Whatever surface flooring you opt for, you will need to make sure that
the supporting floor is free from movement or the potential for cracking.
Where they are accessible, check the joists. If in doubt, an easy and
inexpensive solution is to use restraint straps. These should be spaced
no more than two metres apart, and supported on noggins between the
joists. Ensure that the restraint
straps do not bear on the perpend joints, and that they are notched
into at least three joists and fixed with nails or screws drilled into
the joist. Power tools such as the Makita
LXT202 make the job of fixing restraint straps much quicker and
easier.
